1st driverless trains run on London Underground - April 5, 1964

On April 5, 1964 the London Underground made history as the first driverless trains began transporting people through the subway system. This wasn’t the first time the London Underground made history; more than a century before London became home to the world’s first underground train system in 1863. Today, the world’s oldest underground train system carries more than 950 million people each year on its below-ground tracks. Known popularly as the ‘Tube’, the London system is one of the most massive subway systems in the world.

The first driverless trains ran on what is known today as the Victoria Line. This line was the first deep-level underground track to be built after the subway’s massive expansion from 1905 until 1907. This line opened up areas of London previously not serviced by the subway system. Even today, passengers enjoy this Automatic Train Operation line. The ATO controlled system is partially automatic, meaning that someone must push a few buttons to close the doors before the train automatically takes off. Many newer subway systems are completely automatic and are controlled by computer systems.
