According to legend, William Tell shot an apple off his son's head - November 18, 1307

The historically-debated character of William Tell reputedly shot the famous apple of his son’s head on November 18, 1307. Despite claims that he is a fictionalized character, Tell is considered a Swiss national hero to this day. According to legend, the hated Austrian governor erected a pole in the town center with his hat on it and told all the village people to bow as they passed the pole. Tell refused and was ordered to shoot an apple from his son’s head with a crossbow from 80 paces away, an unheard of distance. His skill with the crossbow prevailed and he successfully shot the apple from his son’s head.

The governor asked Tell why he had brought two bolts to the demonstration and the hero replied that if he had accidentally killed his son, he would have killed the governor immediately afterward. The governor, enraged, had him tied up and brought to his castle. Tell escaped on the way and waited for the governor at his house, killing him when he arrived. This eventually led to a Swiss uprising against Austrian rule.
